If you were to read about the recent history of Gloucester City AFC then Salisbury and Salisbury City would both feature regularly at key dates.

The most notable would be the part that they played in City's failure to win promotion in May 1997 but also they will be remembered as the last opponent to ever grace Meadow Park before the calamitous floods ten years later.

But as hard to bear as the 1-3 defeat at Meadow Park was, in the context of one game then the 3-3 draw at their old Victoria Park ground must rank worse. City were 3-0 up with five minutes to go, John Murphy threw on defender Andy Wollen to get some game time and then Salisbury striker Gary Manson went and scored a hat-trick, the last goal of which was set up by a deep cross from ex-City star Wayne Noble.

Victoria Park is a venue that will hold fond memories for many from the rickety old pavilion / clubhouse that acted as the bar to the fact that it was easy to avoid the turnstiles owing to it being a public park. Another annoying foible was the way that they used to park cars facing the pitch on a bank behind the top goal and when Salisbury scored there would be flashing lights and honking horns. Something I've only ever seen repeated at Bedworth United.

Another notable date was in February 2000 when it looked like our visit to the new (and unfinished) RayMac Stadium could've been our last game. City fan Mark East dressed as a priest to administer the last rites to the club.

And Salisbury themselves weren't strangers to the Sword of Damocles so it was quite a surprise to see that they had the resources to bankroll a team rumoured to be on £8500 per week as they walked to the Southern League title, with City being their opponents on the day that they won it.
