And judging by the pace of Paul Molloy, good luck this season Gary!
Also Tommy was the source of the old City chant ...
Tony has come to us with a bit of a reputation for diving (from the non-league newsgroup), and anyone who has seen the first four games this season will know that he has been fouled twice in the area. Shows what pace does!
To add to his previous spectacular goal, he scored a Pele style overhead kick at Cambridge on the opening day of the 1998/99 season.

Steve Mokler
Steve came to City at the start of last season because he moved to the area (Rugby!!!) Highly rated, he always did well when we played against Sudbury and always one to swap banter with the away fans! (And the home ones!) At a Sudbury v's City game a few seasons ago, Moks had a sly fag off one of the Hair-Bear-Bunch (private joke!) whilst we were attacking their goal!
QUOTE : "If I could save that, I wouldn't be playing for you bastards!"
Ben Lambert
Local lad from Hardwicke. Played for the youth team last season and also coped admirably when used as cover for the injured Mokler. Gained some valuable experience at Viney St Swithens in the Northern Senior League and this year has returned to Meadow Park as the reserve keeper and understudy to Moks.
Defenders
Jon Holloway
Jon signed for City after he was released by Swindon Town only days after Leroy Rosenior took charge of City. However, he still works for the Robins as a community officer. He's currently in superb form and there is some speculation linking him with a move to Cheltenham. Whenever there's a scuffle on the pitch, even if Jonno's in the opposite corner he's always right in the middle of it!!!
Gary Thorne
Highly rated defender (or midfielder) who signed for City at the same time as Jon Holloway. He has an incredible long throw, which surprisingly isn't used much these days. Gary really should be playing in the football league.
Wayne Thorne
The younger brother of Gary Thorne, and he looks it too! A tough tackling if sometimes indisciplined left back. His nickname is Bungle.
Gary Kemp
What can you say about Gary Kemp?
Signed for City in 1991 from Almondsbury Picksons (who?), and made his debut in the unforgettable 3-1 FA Trophy victory at Merthyr Tydfil in place of Geoff Basher Hancocks. If he could only pass a ball (instead of hoofing it over the satnd and into next week!), he would surely have been playing league football by now.
Some of the more memorable moments from his career were when I was stood right behind our goal in a pre-season friendly against Cambridge Utd. Gary went to head the ball clear and got beaten to it by Canadian international Carlo Corrazin, his reward? A powerful headbutt in the face from Kempy. Ouch! And then there was the time that he tackled Hednesford legend Joe O'Connor, and ended up losing his two front teeth, in O'Connor's kneecap!
Steve Fergusson
City's record signing, Fergie cost £25,000 from Worcester City in 1991 and then left to join Telford for less then half! He returned to Meadow Park two seasons ago, via Worcester (again!) and has been a big hit ever since. He can play up front or (and mainly nowadays) at the back, but sometimes his lack of pace lets him down. And, he knows every trick in the book!
Will Steadman
Ex-youth team player from Newent who had trials with Gary Thorne at Chelsea. And he can play cricket too! Will is one to watch, although at times he still shows his lack of experience.
John McGrath
Resigned for the club in pre-season after leaving City twelve months earlier to join Moor Green. Did look reasonably good in the warm up games but in the opening few matches Rosenior has opted for Will Steadman and then Hary Thorne in his favoured berth.
Midfielders
Chris Burns
Chris is our club captain and the manager of City's youth team. He originally played for C**tenham Town, before being signed for Portsmouth by the late Tony Barton (The manager who won the European Cup with Aston Villa) for £25,000 in 1990. He suffered heart break losing to Liverpool in the semi final of the FA Cup before moving on to Bournemouth and then Northampton Town (where he was also captain). He joined the Tigers in 1996 and captained the team that finished third in the league and reached the semi-final of the FA trophy in 1996-97. He is extremely skillful for a big man, but he lets himself down by saying more than he needs to to referees! One of the few players who lives in Gloucester.
Dave Webb
As City's midfield playmaker Webby is having a tough time so far this season and has recently found himself dropped to make way for Tommy Callinan. He originally joined the club from Stroud (now Forest Green Rovers) before being offloaded to Trowbridge during the financial cutbacks at the end of the Les Alderman era. Rejoined in 1994 and then missed the entire 94-95 season having had his leg broken in a pre-season friendly at Mangotsfield. He is now City's second longest serving player (after Gary Kemp).
Andy Tucker
One of John Murphy's last signings, from C**tenham Town in 1995. In my opinion he was the player of the season last year because, although only a squad player, whenever he was called upon (which was often!) he always put in a good performance even though the majority of
the T-End though he was shite.
Mike Wyatt
Summer signing from Bath City who can play anywhere down the right hand side. Described by the Bath website as 'inconsistent' and Mike has already lost his place only ten games into the season. He has an eye for goal and he enjoyed his strike against the Romans in the 2-1 win at Twerton Park earlier this season.
Tommy Callinan
Re-signed for City on September 29th 1998 and was exclusively reported in Tiger Roar Online. Originally joined City in 1992 and made over 100 appearances before leaving to join Forest Green after failing to secure a place in John Murphy's City side. Won two championship medals with FGR and eventually became Frank Gregans assistant manager at The Lawn. Left 'the Green' early in September and hooked up with Dorchester for one game before making his second City debut in the 1-0 victory at Bromsgrove.
Whilst playing away at Hastings a long time ago (the day that Michael Oakes made his debut for City) Tommy was elbowed in the face by Carlton Wynter. One of our fans said 'He wouldn't do that in the street' and she went on to explain how he was one of the hardest men in Cheltenham!
Tony Hemmings
Wow! What a signing!
I was amazed when I heard that we had signed Tony because I've seen what he's capable of. He played for Macclesfield Town in the FA Trophy final against Northwich Victoria, and his marker kicked & tripped him that much that he ended up watching the last 20 mins on TV!
Paul Molloy
Midfielder signed in the close season for local rivals Worcester City. We haven't seen a lot of him at the moment, unfortunately there is a lot of him to be seen. When he's fit he looks capable of doing a job in the centre of the park spraying passes around.
Kwesi Cairns
A midfielder (or forward) from Stroud who was released from his YTS contract at Stoke City at the end of last season. Has looked good in pre season and will make a very useful squad player for the coming season.
Steve Bennett
Left Winger. Had a great game when he replaced Darren Keeling in the Wolves game, but has flattered to deceive in the next two games. Ex-Swindon, deserves to be tried at Southern league level.
Attackers
Andy Mainwaring
Andy Mainwaring was signed from Bromsgrove for £1000 in late 1997,
and caused the Inland Revenue's attempt to wind
the club up. He made his debut against Crawley Town and I
said that "He isn't quick enough and he isn't strong enough". Twenty
goals later.........
Also, he scored an incredible goal against Bath City on New Years Day 1998,
leaving the keeper standing with his dipping swerving volley.
If he can
get thirty goals next season, we will be up there in May.
Darren Keeling
I love reading the pen pictures of the Gloucester City players where it says that Darren was snapped up after a spell out of the game! When he came to the club late on last season he scared the Stevenage defence shitless and also put in a superb performance at home to Sittingbourne and it looked as if we may he signed a great right winger. Unfortunately this season Darren has expressed his preference to playing up front, where his ability in the air will be a major boost but he still needs to work on his shooting.
Adie Mings
Would you buy a car from this man?
Strong, robust striker signed from Bath City in the summer of 1996. Has
recently started working at Hartland Renault for City's Chairman Rob
Thomas. An amiable player who gets as many yellow cards as he scores
goals. Suffered criminal injustice when he was sent off in the Trophy
replay against Stevenage, after being conned by their defender Mark Smith.
Will always be remembered by me for the volley he scored at Newport, early
in his Gloucester City career. Oh yeah, and the equaliser against Dagenham!
Andy Hoskins
Now in his second season with City after missing half of the last campaign with a broken leg. When he signed everyone groaned, but given a chance, he has proved more than capable at this level. Will do well when called upon.
Tom Rutter
Ex youth team striker signed in the summer from the now defunct Trowbridge Town (couldn't have happened to a nicer team!) Showed great enthusiasm in the pre-season friendly against Coventry and will certainly cause problems for tired defenders when called upon in the coming
months. Will probably join Cinderford in November!
